People are shopping in a store less and less these days. Many now opt for on-line shopping for its ease and simplicity.
Amazon dominates the online shopping market. Unfortunately, this rise in online shopping has also seen a rise in thefts from so-called “package thieves”. These are people who watch for Amazon or other deliveries and quite literally steal the delivered package from the doorstep or designated safe place.
The problem in the US is becoming so large that police have been trying to catch the criminals by leaving fake parcels.
In an attempt to prevent these crimes, a Canadian company called Darby has invented a smart mailbox.
The smart mailbox connects to your smartphone and includes a special anti-theft drop slot for small packages. For larger items, the courier can communicate directly with the owner who can remotely authorize the opening of the mailbox.
The mailbox includes a motion sensor so that it can automatically know when a package has been delivered.
The mailbox requires WiFi and a power connection and is expected to retail for approximately $399.
